Profit Comes First, Not Last
Blog post description.
For a long time, I thought profit was whatever was left over.
You know how that goes. Money comes in, bills go out. Supplies, expenses, this need and that need — and by the end of the month, you look at what remains and hope there is something there. Most months, there was not. Not because I was not working hard. I was working very hard. The problem was the order.
That is the heart of Profit First, and it changed how I built my businesses: profit comes first, not last.
Revenue is vanity. Profit is sanity.
A big sales month can look exciting on the outside and still leave a business owner with nothing set aside. What matters is not only what comes in. What matters is what you intentionally keep, and what you give every dollar a job to do before the spending starts.
When money comes into your business, decide the order before you spend it. Set your profit aside first — even if it is small at the start. Then set aside what you will need for taxes and for paying yourself, and run the business on what is left for expenses.
That may sound backwards if you have always paid everything else first. But when expenses have to fit inside what remains, you start to see your business clearly. You notice what is truly needed. You stop letting every cost grow just because money happened to be sitting there.
I learned this after my own rebuilding years — after learning to save under the Dave Ramsey plan, and then finding Profit First and building my businesses on that foundation. It gave me a calmer way to handle money, and it is a big part of how I live debt-free today.
One simple takeaway to try: The next time money comes in, pause before you spend any of it. Move a small, set amount into a separate place for profit first — a separate account, or even a clearly marked envelope if you are just beginning to practise the habit. Small is fine. First is what matters.
Then look at what is left with fresh eyes, and let your expenses fit the business you actually have.
You do not have to fix everything in one month. You only have to change the order. Profit first. Everything else after.
Rooting for you, Atama
